When I came across a short story collection entitled The Elephant Vanishes while I was at university, I hadn’t a clue how much the wordsmith behind each story would influence me to this day. Haruki Murakami is a prolific novelist of speculative fiction whose storytelling has broken barriers of language and the concept of consciousness as a whole.

Whatever words I say can’t possibly be strong enough to capture the essence and brilliance of Murakami-Sensei. Teaching his reader the importance of expression, understanding, bonds, breaking away from what is considered normal; Murkami-Sensei composes tales transformation that ushers others to appreciate moments of peace and struggle whether it’s day by day or a substantial amount of time.

I could gush over his work ceaselessly, however I’m going to restrain myself. Aside from the influence he had over my writing style, he also had a hand in assisting me with composing my current novel series, A Space Between Worlds.

I’ll leave you with my top picks from Murakami Haruki that I implore you to read:

  • 1Q84
  • Kafka On the Shore
  • The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
  • After Dark
  • Hard-Boiled Wonderland and The End of The World

Author and Novelist; an eternal seeker of self.
